More people depend solely on cell phones

For many people, the residential place telephone is fast becoming the equivalent of a vestigial organic structure portion - it's there, but functions small or no purpose.

According to a survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 22.3 percentage of U.S. families with both landline and cell telephones have almost all of their telephone telephone calls on their mobile phone. That's 13.1 percent of all families in the United States.

Combined with wireless-only households, 28.9 percent, or nearly 3 out of every 10 households, are reliant on or almost completely dependent on cell phones.

"I was surprised by this figure that it was this high," said Dr. Sir Leslie Stephen Blumberg, who conducted the study for the CDC. "From a study researcher's perspective, this is very troubling. It proposes the size of the population that we are not able to attain with landline telephones is twice as big as we predicted."

The information come up from the CDC's national wellness interview survey, a door-to-door poll taken every six months.
